First King of all Norway (872–933). A series of battles with minor kings culminated in his decisive victory at Hafrsfjord. He then succeeded in bringing the Orkney and Shetland islands, together with much of northern Scotland, into his kingdom and forced out many Vikings who went on to conquer Iceland and land in western Europe.
