The amount of money the owner of a ship has to pay to a port authority for the use of the port and its facilities. Ships pay on their net tonnage, that is, on their earning capacity; yachts pay per metre of their overall length. As most ports are now recognized as competent pilotage authorities pilotage charges are included in their disbursements.
