A situation, circumstance, or condition that is unusually stressful, difficult to tolerate, and causes the person(s) experiencing it an undue burden of distress, pain, or financial difficulties. Hardship in some occupations can justify compensation, such as extra financial recompense (a hardship allowance), and can be a reason for seeking damages in a legal action against the agent responsible for it.
