Born and educated in Germany, Hardy completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford. He joined the staff at King's College London in 1973, where he subsequently held the chair in Indian Religions from 1996 until his premature death. A scholar with an exceptionally wide knowledge of Indian religions and languages, and a particular expertise in South Indian religious history and literature, he published two important monographs: Viraha-Bhakti: The Early History of Kṛṣṇa Devotion in South India (1983), and The Religious Culture of India: Power, Love and Wisdom (1994).
