Initially he worked as an engineer at Ove Arup and Partners in London, developing a range of innovative structures and collaborating with many significant architects, including Richard Rogers and Jørn Utzon. As Professor of Architecture and Engineering Design at the University of Bath, he highlighted the importance of multi-disciplinary design in the education of building designers. In 1976, together with a team of six colleagues from Arup, he founded Buro Happold, a consultancy dedicated to working alongside international architects to design buildings that were integrated and elegant, economically attractive and environmentally efficient.
