A leading Mahāyāna scholar-monk active during the late 8th century ce in northern India.he was famed as a commentator on Prajñā-pāramitā Sūtras and the Abhisamaya-alaṃkāra of Asaṇga or Maitreyanātha. With the support and patronage of king Dharmapāla he founded the Buddhist university-monastery of Vikramaśīla in eastern India. He is noteworthy for having controversially interpreted the concept of the ‘intrinsic body’ (svābhāvika-kāya) as a separate fourth element underlying the standard Mahāyāna doctrine of the Buddha's ‘three bodies’ (trikāya).
