US composer, director, and president of the Harkness foundation. She studied music with Nadia Boulanger and dance with L. Fokine, and in 1961 established the Harkness Foundation which sponsored Robbins's Ballet USA (1961) and the Joffrey Ballet (1962–4). She set up her own Harkness Ballet in 1964, the Harkness House for Ballet Arts in New York in 1965, and opened the Harkness Theater on Broadway in 1974. The Foundation continued to support dance projects including the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center.
