German Church historian and theologian. From 1888 to 1921 he was a professor at Berlin. He was probably the most outstanding patristic scholar of his generation, dealing especially with the pre-Nicene period. He aroused conservative opposition by his critical attitude to traditional Christian dogma and by his emphasis on the moral aspects of Christianity to the exclusion of the doctrinal. He also published notable studies on the Synoptic problem.
