Glyndebourne début 1957; CG 1962; Bayreuth 1967; NY Met 1977. Outstanding roles incl. Elsa, Arabella in Strauss's opera, Ellen Orford, and the Governess in The Turn of the Screw. Sang in f.p. of Britten's War Requiem, 1962 and Tippett's 3rd Sym. 1972. Created Mrs Coyle in Owen Wingrave, tv 1971. Retired from stage 1984, but sang Nadia in The Ice Break at Proms 1990. Prof. of singing RCM from 1985, teacher of singing, Britten‐Pears Sch., Snape, 1985–2002 (dir. of singing 1986–7). Sang at Proms 1994. CBE 1965.
