(1823–1906), Englishborn poet and religionist, began his career in 1845 as a minister of Universalism, was converted to spiritualism by Andrew Davis, and later established communities of believers in the Brotherhood of the New Life, which aimed at the creation of a new social system through the spiritual regeneration of mankind. He wrote mystic poetry, which he claimed to dictate while in a state of trance.
