Hart modernized and restructured Oxford University Press as its controller (1883–1915). He is best known for two publications, Notes on a Century of Typography (1900) and Rules for Compositors and Readers. First issued privately in 1893, ‘Hart’s Rules’ became the established authority on English spelling and punctuation. At OUP, Hart supervised the printing of the early parts of the New [Oxford] English Dictionary.
