British dancer and director. He studied with Judith Espinosa and at the Royal Academy of Dancing, joining the Vic-Wells Ballet in 1938 where he was rapidly promoted to principal. He was dancing lead classical roles before the age of 21 as well as creating roles in, for example, de Valois's The Prospect Before Us (1940). After war service (1942–6) he returned to the company as principal, creating roles in Ashton's Sylvia (1952) and Homage to the Queen (1953). In 1955 he was appointed ballet master, becoming assistant director of the Royal Ballet (1962–70). He was then director of ballet at the US International University of Performing Arts in San Diego, California (1970–4), and also artistic director of PACT Ballet Johannesburg (1971–5) where he staged several Ashton ballets. Between 1975 and 1977 he worked as administrator of the Royal Ballet, then in 1980 was appointed artistic director of San Diego Ballet. During 1985 he was dance director of San Diego Opera then subsequently artistic director of Ballet West, Utah (1985–97). He has published two books of dance photographs including Ballet and Camera (London, 1956).
