born at Albany, New York, is remembered for his short stories, notably ‘The Luck of Roaring Camp’ (1868), ‘Tennessee's Partner’, and ‘The Outcasts of Poker Flat’, which were included in The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches (1870). His humorous‐pathetic verse includes ‘Plain Language from Truthful James’ (1870), often referred to as ‘The Heathen Chinee’. He spent his later years in England.
