Harvey Wallbangers are cocktails consisting of orange juice mixed with vodka or gin; strictly accurate versions have an Italian liqueur, such as Galliano, floated on top. They seem to be a comparatively recent creation (from the USA, the home of the cocktail), not mentioned in print until 1970. The reasons behind the bizarre name are not known. The Wall-banger is presumably just a compound of wall and banger, perhaps suggestive of the effects of the drink on the drinker.
