First Amer. and London Carmen, but also famous as Norma, Amina, and other bel canto roles. Sang title-role in Manon at its Amer. première 1885. NY Met 1891. Formed own opera co., but after one year retired to live with husband in Wagner's villa Tribschen. After war became blind and poor; supported by funds from Amer. opera enthusiasts.
