Canadian statistician. Hastings graduated from U Toronto (BA, 1953; MA, 1958; PhD, 1962) where he was supervised by Geoffrey Watson. After two years at U Canterbury in New Zealand, and two at Bell Labs, he returned to U Toronto in 1966. It was at U Toronto that he wrote the paper (in Biometrika) that placed the Metropolis algorithm in a statistical context (see Markov chain Monte Carlo methods). In 1971 he moved to U Victoria in British Columbia.
