(Janáček: The Makropulos Case). Ten. An old ex‐diplomat, now somewhat confused. In his youth Hauk had an affair with the Spanish gypsy Eugenia Montez, who died some years ago. Fifty years later he attends the opera in Prague and hears the soprano Emilia Marty. He is so struck by her resemblance to his past love that he goes to visit her in her dressing‐room. Much to the astonishment of all her other visitors, she seems to know who he is and welcomes him—they even embrace. Hauk is amazed to realize that Emilia and Eugenia are the same person.
