Hawley, 20th-century American dentist] A removable orthodontic appliance designed to passively stabilize the teeth after planned tooth movement is complete, to prevent relapse while the alveolar tissues complete their remodelling. It consists of a metal wire which surrounds the teeth, anchored to an acrylic resin plate which sits on the palate or floor of the mouth.
