Provost of Oriel College, Oxford, 1828–74. He was influential in weaning J. H. Newman from his early Evangelicalism, but later stopped him from receiving tutorial pupils. In 1841 he drew up the condemnation of Tract 90 by the Oxford Heads of Houses.
