English-born author and scenarist, reared in New York City. His novels, written after army service in Italy, include All Thy Conquests (1946), about differences between American troops and Roman citizens; Shadow of Heaven (1947), about an aging labor organizer; The Girl on Via Flaminia (1949), about a bittersweet affair between a lonely American soldier and a respectable Italian girl, adapted as a play by Hayes (1954); and The Stockbroker, the Bitter Young Man, and the Beautiful Girl (1973), an ironic novella. He has also published poems.
