(1560–1622) English sailor, son of Sir John Hawkins. Commander in the Elizabethan navy serving against the Spanish Armada (1588). In 1593 he left England with the intention of surveying eastern Asia, where he hoped to establish an English trading empire. On the way, he plundered Valparaiso in Spanish America, and was held by the Spaniards until a ransom was paid in 1602.
