Hayward was educated at King's College, Cambridge, and while still an undergraduate edited Rochester’s Poems (1926). He later edited Donne (1929) and Swift (1934) and numerous anthologies including The Oxford Book of Nineteenth-Century Verse (1964). He also compiled the influential English Poetry: A Catalogue of First and Early Editions (1947; 2e, 1950) and guided (as sole editor) the periodical TheBook Collector from its inception in 1952 until his death.
