An extra-oral component of an orthodontic appliance which encircles the head and provides anchorage for an intra-oral appliance. It usually consists of a facebow, headcap, or neckstrap, and some form of force mechanism such as a spring. It is normally worn at night and during part of the day. Reverse headgear consists of an external frame that rests on the forehead and chin which is attached, via elastics, to hooks on an upper fixed appliance; it is used to increase anterior anchorage or modify maxillary growth in an opposite way to conventional headgear.
