The National College for School Leadership took over responsibility for the professional development of head teachers and aspiring head teachers from the Department of Education and Skills in 2001. For teachers aspiring to headship, such as deputy heads and assistant heads, it offers four programmes: The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), the Future LeadersProgramme, the Trainee Headteacher Programme, and the Development Programme for Consultant Leadership. For newly appointed head teachers in their first headship role there is a range of five programmes of professional development on various aspects of the head's role: Early Headship Provision, New Visions, Safer Recruitment, Strategic Leadership of ICT, and London Leadership Strategy. All of these are available also to experienced head teachers, in addition to programmes on school improvement and building schools for the future. Some universities and other higher education institutions accept evidence of successful completion of programmes such as the NPQH as grounds for accelerated entry onto postgraduate programmes in education.
