A term used in many countries to mean any of several varieties of organized systems of medical care, including prepaid group medical practices, collective group insurance-covered, fee-per-service medical care, and community clinics organized and run by nonprofit or profit-making organizations. In the United States the term means more or less the same but is usually applied to health maintenance organizations.
