A directly measurable variable that reflects the health status of the population. Health indicators include infant and perinatal mortality rates, incidence rates of notifiable diseases that are reported with reasonable completeness, disability days measured by medical certification for sickness absence from school or work, cancer incidence as recorded and reported by a cancer registry, records of certain specific prescribed medications, records of causes of death, the proportion of certified deaths for which adequate medical records exist, and others. Some indicators may be measured in terms of their presence or absence, for instance some health related legislation and availability of sickness and medical and hospital care insurance.
