Quick Reference

Abnormal heart sound detectable with a stethoscope applied over the heart and particular blood vessels. Murmurs are heard in most athletes after severe exercise. They are usually benign, and do not affect the athlete's performance or heart function. However, heart murmurs may need to be evaluated by a cardiologist to exclude serious conditions, such as defective valves, which might preclude athletic involvement.
