A genus of shrubs, very closely related to Veronica but, unlike that genus, truly shrubby and with the capsule dorsally (not laterally) compressed. They are much cultivated for the flowers and foliage. There are about 75 species in the extreme south of S. America, New Zealand, and Australia.
