American poet, born in New York, whose volumes include The Hard Hours (1967), The Venetian Vespers (1979), and The Transparent Man (1989). At ease with both light and sombre verse, and writing with a mastery of classical and traditional forms, his work dwells on art, landscape, love, and loss: many of his poems evoke an intense experience of Europe, often linked to a restrained and poignant confessional mode.
