[J. W. Heck (1923–), American dentist] A rare type of oral mucosal wart characterized by flat-topped papules (pimples) without a stem (sessile) that are only slightly raised above the surface and are usually the colour of normal pink mucosa. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Treatment is usually by removal using surgery, cryosurgery, or laser treatment, although they can regress spontaneously.
