Quick Reference

(2nd cent.),

Church historian. He wrote five Books of ‘Memoirs’ against the Gnostics. It appears that he drew up a ‘succession list’ of the early bishops of Rome; it has been argued that the list in Epiphanius (Haer. 27. 6) is a reproduction of this. If so, it is the earliest witness to the names of the first Roman bishops. Feast day, 7 Apr.
