on the basis of naval service in the Pacific during World War II and a knowledge of the interests of a mass audience gained through his prior career with Reader's Digest, wrote the very popular novel Mister Roberts (1946), about the dull day-to-day life aboard a cargo ship, its stupid captain, and its decent cargo officer. It was also successfully adapted as a play.
