Studied in Orinda, Calif., with Ernst Bacon, 1977–9, in Paris for 2 years, then at UCLA (piano with Johana Harris, comp. with Roger Bourland, Paul DesMarais, and David Raksin). Regular accomp. to many singers (Frederica von Stade, Thomas Hampson, Jennifer Larmore, etc.). Comp.‐in‐res. San Francisco Opera from 1998. Received Guggenheim Fellowship 2005. Works incl. Dead Man Walking, opera (1998–2000); The End of the Affair, opera (2003, rev. 2004–5); At the Statue of Venus, scena (2005); str. qt. (Lugalla) (1984); Glengariff Trio, vn., vc., pf.
