Western coastal province of modern-day Saudi Arabia. Home to the pilgrimage cities of Mecca and Medina. Historically, Hejaz linked the main caravan routes of northern and southern Arabia and served as a center of pre-Islamic worship where Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity came into contact with each other. It was the first region to become part of the Islamic world under Muhammad's leadership.
