An ancient Egyptian city situated near the apex of the Nile delta at what is now Cairo. It was an important religious centre and the centre of sun worship, and was the original site of the obelisks known as Cleopatra's Needles. The name is Greek, from hēlios ‘sun’ + polis ‘city’.

Heliopolis was also the ancient Greek name for Baalbek.
