A telephone line, generally a free call, open 24 hours 7 days a week, to provide advice, guidance, referrals, etc., for people experiencing various kinds of social and/or emotional problems. Help lines have become commonplace in almost all large communities, often staffed by volunteers, perhaps with backup provided by a trained social worker.
