English Baptist. Having migrated to the Netherlands with J. Smyth in 1608, he became convinced that ‘Infant Baptism’ was invalid, and he joined Smyth's separatist community, the first Baptist Church to come into existence. In 1612 he returned to London, where he founded the first General Baptist congregation in England. His Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity (1611–12) contained an early plea for universal religious toleration.
