S. African‐born Eng. composer, conductor, pianist, and administrator. After teaching mus. in S. Africa, joined BBC staff 1926, becoming head of mus., Midlands Region (Birmingham), 1933–4. Prof. of mus., Birmingham Univ. 1934–44. Dir. of mus., BBC, 1944–7. Works incl. A Carol Symphony, pf. quintet, va. sonata, and settings of Edward Lear's Nonsense Songs.
