The hypothesis that the left prefrontal cortex is disproportionately involved in encoding and the right prefrontal cortex in retrieval of episodic memories. On the basis of brain imaging data from functional MRI studies, the Estonian-born Canadian psychologist Endel Tulving (born 1927) and co-authors put this hypothesis forward in an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America in 1994.
