Abnormal hemoglobin genes arising as a result of unequal crossing over between genes sharing homologous nucleotide sequences. Examples are the fused gamma-beta gene that codes for the non-alpha chain of Hb Kenya and the variety of fused delta-beta genes that code for the non-alpha chains of the Hb Lepore (q.v.).
