(1893–1982), American-born painter and photographer, mainly active in Paris. After studying painting in Germany and Paris she entered the Bauhaus in 1927 and, influenced by László Moholy-Nagy, turned increasingly to experimental photography. Although her painting became secondary, her portraits, still lifes, and other photographic work were strongly influenced by Cubism and Constructivism. She participated in the 1929 Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart and other important shows before opening an advertising, fashion, and portrait studio in Paris. After 1945 she returned increasingly to painting.
