US astronaut. He was the first person to log more than 1 000 hours as a space shuttle pilot and commander. His flights include a 16-day mission aboard Columbia in June 1996, achieving a record duration time for a shuttle flight. He left NASA in 1997 to pursue a career in business. He was selected as an astronaut in 1985.
