One of the zwitterionic buffers (hydroxyethyl-piperazine-ethane-sulphonic acid) originally described by Norman Good and colleagues in 1966 and very commonly used in tissue culture media because of its pKa of 7.5. Related compounds are molluscicides so may be unsuitable for some invertebrate cultures.
