A family of receptors (HER-2, erbB2, 1255 aa; HER-3, erbB3, 1342 aa; HER-4, erbB4, 1308 aa) of the epidermal growth factor receptor family of receptor tyrosine kinases. The ligands are neuregulins. The HER2 gene is amplified and overexpressed in 25–30% of breast cancers and correlates with poor prognosis, although these are the tumours that respond to herceptin. HER-3 is a receptor for heregulin.
