(b Woking, 1904; d London, 1976). Eng. musicologist and writer. Career in th. before joining BBC 1927–46 (ass. dir. of mus. 1940–6). Helped to plan and produce Promenade concerts until 1961. Ed. and cond. works by Locke, Purcell, Bach, Arne, and Handel. Wrote books and essays on Handel's Messiah, Sibelius, Bax, and Tchaikovsky. With wife Anna Instone (b Cardiff, 1912; d London, 1978), presented BBC's weekly Music Magazine on radio 1944–73.
