a writer of great versatility and humour, contributed to Punch for many years. His works include The Secret Battle (1919), Misleading Cases in the Common Law (1929), A Book of Ballads (1949), and Independent Member (1950), describing his experiences as MP for Oxford University (1935–50). Herbert campaigned for several causes, including the improving of authors' rights and changes in the obscenity laws. He was knighted in 1945. His autobiography, My Life and Times, appeared in 1970.
