Term loosely used to denote ballets (mostly created in the 20th century) that have gained permanent positions with the repertory of a company. While distinct from the 19th-century classical canon, they are nonetheless perceived as having ‘classic’ status. Ballets by choreographers such as Tudor, Ashton, de Mille, Nijinska, Balanchine, and MacMillan come into this category.
