Herne the Hunter

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A spectral hunter said to have been in medieval times a keeper in Windsor Forest, who hanged himself from the tree known as Herne's (or, later, Falstaff's) oak. The story bears some resemblance to the tale of the Wild Huntsman, and a version of it is related by Mrs Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor (iv. iv). Herne also appears in Ainsworth's historical romance Windsor Castle (1843).
