Greek scientist whose interests included optics, mechanical inventions and practical mathematics. A long-lost book, the Metrica, rediscovered in 1896, contains examples of mensuration, showing, for example, how to work out the areas of regular polygons and the volumes of different polyhedra. It also includes the earliest known proof of Hero's formula.
