Quick Reference

A very contagious skin infection characterized by multiple or single lesions caused by the herpes simplex type I virus. Its name derives from the ease at which an infected participant of combat, contact, and collision sports (e.g. rugby, water polo, and wrestling) can transmit the virus to an uninfected opponent in practice and competition. Infected athletes should not take part in contact or collision sports. Treatment with acyclovir (an antiviral agent) often helps to resolve the infection. See also scrumpox.
